...planned spontaneity...

Andy and I woke up early and spent the morning planning for our next big adventure! His excitement matched mine when we began, but by the third hour, his passion was gone. I can't blame him.

Planning is just plain exhausting.

Scouring the internet, looking up locations, hours, prices and places to eat. Painstakingly making purchases and hoping that it will all work out. Calling attractions on the phone so you can get some much needed information. All while trying to organize your trip around the city into neat piles so that you aren't traipsing here and there all day. And that doesn't include the disappointment when you realize some activities will have to be saved for another time.

Because so much of our itinerary is dependent on outside forces, i.e. weather, we will most likely not be able to stick to our plan, but I feel better knowing that we have one.  I believe that we will be able to react to any disturbances with patience and optimism because we'll be prepared to reorganize our daily adventures to our specific needs in a moment's notice.

There are some people who will vigorously plan, and who will desperately cling to that plan. Should anything happen outside of that plan, they get scared and don't know how to react. Some shut down and cannot function outside of the plan.

Others will almost never bother with a plan, or they'll plan little in an attempt to be spontaneous. Sadly, these non-planners miss out on some exciting adventures because they don't even realize that there is an adventure to be had.

While making a plan is important, there will always be some things that are out of our control and we must adapt. On the other hand, being the right person in the right place at the right time takes some skilled planning. Ultimately, I'm thinking that we're going to need both if we want our trip (and our lives) to be successful.

Are you in the process of making plans? How are they coming along?

  1. Shhhhh... I won't tell of your new found feelings for Matt. Your secret is mine. Actually I share that same affection ;-).

I'm officially on spring break. I don't have plans other than to take care of some things like renewing my passport, going for a eye exam, a couple of home improvement projects and trying out a couple of restaurant copycat recipes.

Last monday I signed up for spotify. Everyday since I have recieved emails from them with playlists. I've been saving them till I was off so this evening I will start going thru many tracks of music. I'll let you know if anything special pops up!

Like you I am a planner when it comes to travel. I have learned that the best plans can go astray, many times due to the weather. Once in San Gimignano we had just finished a walking tour of the city when the sky opened . We all ran for cover from the rain. After a few minutes an elderly couple in our tour group popped open an umbrella and stepped out into the weather and walked off down the cobblestone street. Our tour guide saw them and said "now that's the difference between a traveler and a tourist". Since then I"ve tried harder to be a traveler.

    1. That's an awesome story! I want to be a traveler, too!! I've been a little discouraged over the past few days as I look at the weather for NYC only to find that it may be snowing when we're there. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't going to be 50 - 60 here. We expected it would be cold, though. No matter what, it's going to be wonderful!

Passport? Is that for some future adventure? Your staycation sounds wonderful, in fact. I'd love to hear about your restaurant copycat recipes and how they turn out. And your home improvement projects. I have some in mind, but I'm not sure that I can accomplish them by myself. Are you getting help?

I hear a lot about Spotify, but every time I try to use it, it won't let me listen to anything. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I've got no time to figure it out. Maybe on a future break? Which reminds me, I don't know how to put a private email on my blog yet. It is on my list of things to do, though. I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures!

Have a wonderful week off! Can't wait to hear of all your adventures!
