I've always believed that I had a black
thumb. Most plants die within of few months of coming home with me.
It's discouraging to watch them go from healthy to withered or yellow
from overwatering.
Last summer was the first summer that
my garden actually grew and yielded a (very small) crop, due to some
important factors. One, the weather was not as scorching as it had
been in summers past, when you could actually smell the peppers
cooking on the vine. Two, I had rearranged my patio pot garden and
committed myself to watering the plants twice daily.
By the end of the summer, it occurred
to me that both nature and I had to be working together for my garden
to succeed. It was a great realization, one that I've been able to
apply to many aspects of my life.

comes dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Edison
Without a doubt, success is hard work,
but, in the end, it's worth all the blood, sweat and tears that you
pour into it.

The aloe looks wonderful. I'm going to have to try some. Are you going to grow some peppers and lettuce this spring?. I know of three small family owned seed companies in your part of the world. they are Granny's Heirloom Seeds, White Harvest Seed Company, and Bakers Creek Heirloom Seeds. It's hard to have a small business these days so I like to support them when I can. I've ordered from Granny's a couple of times and they are nice enough to send a little lagniappe along in the form of heirloom tomato seeds. Which is very appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting to tell you that Bill Penzey has a sister in Chicago who is also in the spice business. She owns The Spice House and they have some spice blends not offered by Penzeys.
Have a great day.
Yes, I will definitely try the lettuce and peppers. I loved our lettuce! I'll have to look up the seed companies and see what I might like when we get back from Spring Break. I hope your break has been wonderful!
DeleteI keep forgetting to tell you: we ran out of cinnamon while I was baking something and I sent Andy to the grocery store to just buy any old cinnamon. Ick, Julia, ick!! It's so terrible tasting! You can absolutely tell the difference. And it's not a cheap brand. Sigh, I'll be making a Penzey's run when we get back into town. I'll pick up that Italian Herb Mix as well.
Hope you've had a restful (and productive) week!
My break is almost over but I've enjoyed it and gotten alot done. Yesterday I was cleaning out a armoire and I found a bag of yarn that I forgot I even had. I am the worst knitter in the world but I decided there was enough yarn for a couple of dish cloths. So I got those made. I enjoyed it so I will get some more cotton yarn and make some more.
ReplyDeleteI came across another recipe blog quite by accident. The Iowa Housewife a blog written by two sisters Myrna and Sue. I made their custurd pie yesterday, It was very easy and tasty.
I understand about the cinnamon. Grocery store cinnamon tastes bitter to me. I keep Italian Herb Mix or Pasta Sprinkle on hand as they are similar and both work well for italian dishes. Also love Pork Chop Seasoning and my fave Sandwich Sprinkle which I probably use to much on everything!.
O.K. as I have gone through the week listening to these playlists from spotify I've kept a running list of tunes. A real mixed bag of music, all on you tube.
