...country living...

We had gone to bed late, but for some reason, sleeplessness whispered in my ear at 3:42am and my brain refused to rest. Tired of tossing and turning, I got dressed and climbed out of the tent and into the cool night air around 5am, intent on catching the sunrise.

There is something dazzling about the country. Maybe it's the air, or the
smells (manure and fresh cut grass), or the silence that makes one's
eyes sparkle just a bit brighter.

I paced around the little campground as I waited for the sun to make her
spectacular appearance - two miles worth of pacing.

The sheep and the goats stared at me as I meandered past. I waved.

There is something inherently hopeful in a sunrise.
And it was breathtaking.

Spent the morning fishing and Andy caught a fish!
His first in a long time.

I held a minnow. My first time ever to touch a fish!
(That wasn't in the shape of a square or a stick!)
It was wiggly and slimey...and wiggly. Super wiggly.
Totally freaked (and grossed) me out!

After fishing, we finished our card game, had lunch, and then headed back to the city. Exhausted from our adventure, we spent the rest of the afternoon napping.

My eyes filled with tears as he kissed me goodbye and left for work. The best part of vacation is always time spent with Andy, and the worst part is having to go back to our odd schedules, where we barely see each other.

I hope you all have had a wonderful week! I'm so grateful to have people in my corner that encourage me to get out there and experience life and be brave. If it weren't for you, I might just sit at home and watch TV. Thanks for pushing me beyond my comfort zones.

Now you go out and do something brave, too - then tell me all about it! I'm cheering for you!

  1. I think when my mother referenced scrutiny she was just thinking that sometimes people think that pk's are supposed to be well behaved all the time. I'm also sure she was thinking of a certain red headed brother who was a bit mischevious. She had a wonderful childhood. She grew up during the depression/war years and she still has friends from her childhood that she has kept in touch with for over eighty years.

We had a overcast, drizzly 4th so the ribs ended up baking in the oven. My problem with ribs is I usually over cook them. They end up being dry. Yesterday I used a dry rub and baked them covered. I put some olive oil in the bottom of the pan and kept checking and turning them til I felt they were done. They were pork ribs so I made a bbq sauce I felt would work well with pork and they were good. I caught the ribs on sale. Don't give up, they will put them on sale again around labor day. Try again, you can do it !

I can see the post, don't worry. I'm not a soccer fan either. I think mainly because I haven't made the effort to learn the game. I know the game is popular in Europe because it has come up twice when I was there. Once when we were in York we got on the hotel elevator.and there were some men in the elevator and one of them asked if I was there for the game. I didn't know what game he was talking about so I said no. As soon as he heard my accent he knew I was a tourist. Turns out there was a big soccer game that night and the hotel was full of soccer fans in town for the game. The next time it came up was in Italy. We were near one of the open markets in Florence and the crowd started to part. I looked up to see a funeral procession coming down the narrow street. It was a tight squeeze for the hearse to pass. As the hearse passed I realized the decedant must be a man because on top of the floral sprays were banners with the colors and logo of a soccer team. Also a lifesize poster of a particular soccer player. I presume these items were memorabilia of his favorite player and team. I thought at the time that people over here really, really love their soccer !!! We have a channel that has soccer on all the time, I need to catch a game when the Brits are playing so I can understand the announcer and follow the game.

No fireworks for me this year. It was thundering yesterday evening and I thought that about the time I got out to the site the bottom would fall out, so I stayed home and dry and watched the fireworks on tv. That's ok we always need the rain in the summer.

Glad you had a nice break in the country. Your sunrise pics are lovely. I learned to fish when I was little. At first I afraid to bait a hook but I learned, not with a minnow but with a worm. I would pinch them in half (yuck) and thread them on the hook. That was about as close to being a tom boy as I ever got.You have to be brave if you want to catch a big one. hahaha

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    1. Wow! To stay in touch with those people for so long when you didn't have things like social media, that's impressive! Yes, I think we were expected to be better behaved (we weren't!) but we were also given much grace, as I imagine your mom experienced, too.

Rain on the 4th? Ah nuts! I love fireworks, I'm sorry you missed out on them live and in person. TV fireworks are never the same. Except if by drone! Have you seen that video?

I'm going to try to paste it. Copy and paste this link and see if it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9KZ3jgbbmI

But I'm glad the ribs turned out tasty and I'll try again around Labor Day when they go on sale. ;)

I love to hear your travel stories! Once you figure out the game of soccer, maybe you can give me a crash course.

While I did fish, I wasn't brave enough to bait my own hook. It just seemed so cruel. To pierce the scared little fish and then practically drown it (I know it didn't drown) only for it to be eaten by a bigger fish. Of the three minnows that I held, I gave them their freedom in the lake. Andy's dad baited my hook twice and then I let the boys fish while I watched for bigger fish and enjoyed the sunshine.

Rain is a welcome relief on hot, hot days. I'm hoping we get some here so that it cools down to the 80's. I hope you're week is cooler and more beautiful because of the rain. Have a wonderful one!
