Last summer he told me about a plan he had to build a step flower box for our patio. Unable to envision his grand design, and not sure where it would go, I put him off until this year. When I mentioned that I was interested in hearing more, he became so excited that he drew up some plans and emailed them to me. They are incredibly detailed and impressive, and once I knew what it looked like, I was on board.
I like using my hands to build and create things, and I really wanted this to be an adventure, since I had never done anything like it before. My father-in-law did take some convincing, though, since he was so excited to get to work. Thankfully, he was able to wait a bit for me so that he could teach me a few tricks of the trade.
I arrived right after my morning teaching hours and he set me to work. He had special gloves with my name on them and protective eye wear just for me, which was good because I wasn't prepared for all the flying wood chips and sawdust. He took his time patiently teaching me how to drill holes for nails, how to use differing drill bits and mini saws to create handles, showing me how to use air powered tools like sanders, and supervising my use of the table saw.
We took a break to have lunch with my mother-in-law, and she and I got to chatting while he went back into the garage and kept working. All in all, I put together three of the boxes before I had to run off back to work for afternoon lessons.
I left their house feeling refreshed and so happy. I'm so thankful for my in-laws. They have raised an amazing son, and they have welcomed me into their family with open arms.
It was a perfect afternoon with wonderful company. And you know what? I'm not as intimidated by power tools anymore.

After I went back to work, my father-in-law finished the flower box and sent me pictures. He even painted the base green. Pretty awesome, huh?
Looks like I'm ready to start planting! How have you been celebrating Earth Day?

Kudos to you and your father-in-law. Excellent work on the planter box. Keep going with those power tools. Is your patio covered? Do you think you could put locking casters on the green frame and be able to roll it. You could move the whole unit from shade to sun, and from rain to dry. Have you decided what your going to plant?
ReplyDeleteHappy gardening my friend xoxo
I hope everything at home is beginning to dry out from the water damage.I'm assuming sheetrock, paint, and carpet will have to be replaced. Hope this all goes as smoothely as possible for you.
ReplyDeleteHow did you like the fajita seasoning?
Have a great weekend!!!
We haven't tried the fajita seasoning yet. We had a leftover packet and Andy wanted to use that before opening the jar. We'll have to see...
DeleteSigh...I want my house back, Julia! I called this morning and they are leaving their noisy machines here until Monday...ugh! I'm blasting Rihanna through headphones and I can still hear them. So, so loud.
Yes, lots to be replaced. The carpet, the flooring, (is sheetrock drywall?), paint, etc. They were even saying our kitchen cabinets needed to be replaced since the bathroom is right next to the kitchen and it leaked into some of the cabinets. Sigh. We do have insurance (still haven't posted Thursday's adventure because I haven't had the computer to proof) and they will be paying for the majority of the damages. Phew!
My father in law brought over the boxes yesterday with some river mud in them. I have to wait for the mud to dry and then I can add a bit of potting soil and my plants. Yeehaw! Can't wait! I'll have to look into wheels for it. Maybe we can add those next year.
Broccoli, peppers, tomatillos, romaine and cut and grow lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries, impatiens, pansys, little leos, gerbera daisies, phlox, dahlias, maybe more, but I have to see what room I have. I'm thinking of going for a purple and yellow flower arrangement. I'll have to see what's available. How about you? Are you all set?
Have you had a great week? Were your kiddos just wonderful? Are you looking forward to summer? Have you made any big plans? You take the summer off don't you? Any books you plan to read?
Hope you've had a great one!
I know you want your house back. I understand. When I was in the sixth grade we had water in our house due to a flood. It came in at the baseboards and just rolled across the floor. I think about three inches deep all over the house. I remember the mess. But try to look on the bright side. About eight years ago I built this house and the part of the process I enjoyed this most was picking out carpet, tile, paint, etc. These things help personalize a home. A couple of years ago I got on Angies list, if you need any craftspeople reccomendations for your area let me know.
ReplyDeleteWhat a garden!!! All sounds wonderful to me. Anxious to see how it all works for you. What varieties of broccoli and cucumber do you grow? I have everything in the ground or pot. All's well except I lost one cucumber, that's o.k. I plant them in succession to have a longer growing season and not so many ripe at the sametime.
Twenty four days until school is out! Can you tell I'm counting the days. I have a list of books that I don't think I'll have time to get through. I have a list of projects both indoors and outside. I'll keep you posted on my reading and crafty projects as I go along. I have more than enough planned to keep me busy and out of trouble.haha
Don't you love Aloe Blacc... Wake Me Up and The Man...so good!!!
Have a good weekend despite the noise ♥♥♥
Thanks for the offer of Angie's list, but the restoration company will work with the vendors to fix everything. How exciting to build your own house! I bet it's beautiful!
DeleteWhat a great idea to plant in succession. I never thought of that, but I may try it this year.
What books are on your list? I've been trying to put some together for my summer reading list. Would love to hear yours.
Remind me of Aloe Blacc...I remember hearing the name but I can't remember the song.
The company called to say they're coming out tomorrow at 8am to have a look. Fingers crossed they will take away their machines.
Have a great week!
